Outspan Bolaven Ltd (OBL) is a subsidiary of Olam International which is a leading global integrated supply chain manager and processor of more than 40 agri-food products, supplying various products in more than 60 countries. Over the past ten years, Olam has moved upstream in the supply chain and established coffee plantations in Asia, Latin-America and Africa.

Established in 2012, the coffee plantation of Olam was amongst the first coffee plantations that Olam started. By now OBL is the biggest coffee producer of Laos. Increasingly, the team is focusing on high quality ‘specialty’ coffees by combining variety selection with strong agronomy and excellence in post-harvest handling.

Outspan Bolaven Ltd seeks to recruit an enthusiastic and committed agronomist who is willing to support the plantation management in performance measurement, data-driven decision-making and innovation. In addition to good analytical thinking and agronomic expertise, excellent communication and teamwork skills are required.


Title        :    Coffee Agronomist – Laos


Reports to   :     Plantation Director, Business Head and Global Agronomy Head for Coffee

Purpose       :     The Plantation Agronomist will provide analytical and technical support to Outspan Bolaven Ltd coffee plantation team and drive innovation in-order-to ensure long term sustainability and continuous improvement of coffee production. Candidate will also be responsible for Driving Sustainability, Certification and CR&S goals for Plantations & Farmer Sourced coffees.


Key Result Areas:

  • Organisation of data collection and analysis on crop performance, plant health and soil health
  • Developing field-specific management plans and provide technical backstopping to estate managers through field visits and joint planning and review exercises
  • Run agronomic trails to promote innovation
  • Help develop and implement decision support systems – e.g. global database, mobile phone apps.
  • Lead the Certification and Sustainability efforts for Coffee Plantations and Farmer Groups/Out-growers.
  • Lead efforts on Sustainability projects with customers & deliver execution on inhouse products such as ATSOURCE, Olam Farmer Information System.
  • Develop Community Support Initiatives which can practically support local communities.
  • Interface with External Research Organization/Consultants/Customers to ensure up-to-date knowledge in field of Agronomy & ensuring Customers are aware about work being done in areas of Sustainability, CR&S and Community Support.
  • Sourcing High Quality Specialty/Gourmet and traceable coffees from the Certified Farmer chains.

Required expertise and skills:

  • Minimum MSc / Ing. in agricultural sciences – preferably crop science / agronomy
  • Good data analytical skills – good statistics and GIS knowledge preferred
  • Good communication skills in English 
  • Team player with ability to engage with colleagues in coffee trade, coffee quality, sustainable sourcing
  • 3-10 years of experience in tropical agriculture - experience in perennial systems is preferred
  • Willingness to live and work in a rural area
